How to calculate your average
- Choose whether you want the average of your grades or the grade you need on the final.
- For the average, type each grade and, if they count differently, its weight as a percentage.
- For the grade needed, type your current average, the final's weight and your target.
- Enter the maximum grade on your scale to find out whether the target is reachable.
Simple and weighted average
A simple average adds up the grades and divides by how many there are: 8, 6 and 7 give 7. A weighted average gives some grades more importance: if the midterm is worth 30% and the final 70%, an 8 on the midterm and a 6 on the final give 8 × 0.30 + 6 × 0.70 = 6.6.
To find the grade you need on the final, the tool solves the equation: current average × (1 − final's weight) + final grade × final's weight = target average. With an average of 6, a final worth 40% and a target of 7, you need to score 8.5.
Every school and university has its own rules (rounding, minimum grades per exam, scales); use this as a reference and confirm it in your syllabus.
Good to know
- It doesn't apply rounding or any special rules from your institution.
- Weights are treated as percentages that don't need to add up to 100: the average is calculated with the total you enter.
- When calculating the grade needed, the current average must correspond to the part of the course you've already completed.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the average of my grades?
Type each grade. If they all count the same, leave the weights empty and a simple average is calculated.
How do I calculate a weighted average?
Type each grade with its weight as a percentage. Each grade is multiplied by its weight and divided by the sum of the weights.
What grade do I need on the final to pass?
Choose "Grade needed on the final" and type your current average, the final's weight and the minimum average to pass.
Does it work for 0 to 20 or 0 to 100 scales?
Yes. Change the maximum grade of your scale; the calculation is the same.
Are my grades saved?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser.
