How to count words
- Type or paste your text into the box.
- The counts update as you write.
- Check the reading and speaking time to adjust the length.
- Look at the most repeated words to spot overused terms.
What is this tool for?
A word counter helps when a text has a limit: an essay, a cover letter, a product description, a social media post, an SMS or a meta description for SEO. It also shows how long it takes to read or say out loud, and which words you repeat most.
It works in your browser, so private drafts, contracts or school work are never uploaded.
Limits to keep in mind
- Words are counted with your browser's language rules. In languages written without spaces, such as Japanese, the count follows the browser's word segmentation and may differ slightly from other programs.
- Reading time assumes about 220 words per minute and speaking time about 130. Your own pace may differ.
- The most repeated words ignore very short and common filler words, and only list words that appear at least twice.
Frequently asked questions
Is my text saved or sent to a server?
No. The counting happens in your browser and the text is not stored or sent anywhere. If you close or reload the page, it is gone.
How do I count the words in my text?
Paste your text into the box and the word count appears instantly, above the other counts. If you add or delete text, it updates on its own.
How are words counted?
A word is a sequence of letters or digits separated by spaces or punctuation. Hyphenated words and contractions such as don’t count as one word.
What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?
The first counts everything you typed, including spaces and line breaks. The second ignores all whitespace. Some forms and exams ask for one or the other.
How is reading time calculated?
We divide the number of words by an average reading speed of 220 words per minute. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a typical pace for presentations.
Is there a limit to the text length?
There is no fixed limit. Very long texts, with hundreds of thousands of characters, may take a moment to analyze.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes, it works in modern mobile browsers on Android and iPhone.
