How VAT is calculated
To add VAT, multiply the price before tax by the rate and add it: 100 with 21% VAT is 100 + 21 = 121. To remove it from the final price, divide by (1 + rate): 121 including VAT corresponds to a net price of 100 and a tax of 21.
A common mistake is subtracting the percentage from the final price: 21% of 121 is 25.41, but the VAT included is 21, because the 21% is calculated on the net price. With a 19% rate, a final price of 100 is a net of 84.03 and a tax of 15.97.
The standard rates in the list can change, and many countries have reduced rates or exemptions for certain products. That's why the rate is editable and you should confirm it with your country's tax authority. The same math works for sales tax: just enter the rate.
Things to keep in mind
