How to write a number in words
- Type the number in the field (use a period or comma for decimals).
- Choose the format: plain words or check or invoice.
- In check mode, type the currency if you want it to appear.
- Copy the text and paste it into your check, invoice or document.
When to write a number in words
On checks, promissory notes, contracts and invoices, the amount is written in words to prevent mistakes and tampering. The usual form is the amount in words, the currency and the cents as a fraction: 1234.56 is "one thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and 56/100".
The tool follows English conventions: numbers from 21 to 99 are hyphenated ("twenty-one", "ninety-nine"), there is no "and" inside the hundreds (101 is "one hundred one") and big numbers use the short scale, so 1,000,000,000 is "one billion". The "and" appears only before the cents in check mode.
It is available in Spanish, English and Portuguese. If you use the site in another language, this tool isn't shown.
Good to know
- The maximum is 15 whole digits and 12 decimals.
- In check mode only two decimals (the cents) are used; the rest is dropped without rounding.
- Double-check the result before using it in a legal document.
