How to convert a time between time zones
- Pick the date and time, and the starting city (yours by default).
- See the time and day in the other cities on the list.
- Add or remove cities; the list is saved in your browser.
- Use the planner to find a time when everyone is within working hours.
How time zones work
The world is divided into time zones that differ from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) by whole or half hours. New York is at UTC−5 in winter and UTC−4 in summer, London at UTC+0 in winter and UTC+1 in summer, and Tokyo at UTC+9. So noon in New York is 5 p.m. in London in winter and 2 a.m. the next day in Tokyo.
Many countries change their clocks for daylight saving time, and not all on the same dates, so the difference between two cities can vary during the year. The tool uses your browser's time zone database and calculates the difference for the date you picked, daylight saving included.
It's useful for coordinating meetings, calls and live streams with people in other countries, or for knowing when to call a relative.
Good to know
- Daylight saving rules come from your browser; if a country changed them recently, there may be differences until it updates.
- 50 major cities are shown; if yours isn't there, pick another in the same time zone.
- The planner's working hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in each city.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find out what time it is in another country?
Pick the date and time in your city and add the other country's city: the list shows the local time there and whether it's a different day.
How do I find a meeting time that works for everyone?
Add the cities and look at the planner: green boxes are working hours, yellow ones are early or late, and gray ones are night.
Does it account for daylight saving time?
Yes, it uses your browser's time zone rules for the date you picked.
Are my cities saved?
Only in your browser, so they're there next time. Nothing is sent anywhere.
What is UTC?
It's Coordinated Universal Time, the world's reference time. Each zone is expressed as an offset from UTC, for example UTC−5.
