How to calculate reading time
- Type or paste your text into the box.
- Check the reading time (silent) and the speaking time (out loud).
- If you're over, cut the text and watch the time drop.
- Use the word count to compare with the limit of your assignment.
What is a reading time calculator for?
Knowing how long a text lasts helps you prepare it: a 5-minute speech, a video script, an oral presentation or a blog post with a "4 min read" label. It also helps you check that a presentation fits the time you were given.
The calculation assumes about 220 words per minute for silent reading and about 130 for speaking. Everything is calculated on your device and your text is never sent to a server.
Things to keep in mind
- It's an estimate: everyone reads and speaks at a different pace, and technical texts take longer.
- Pauses, slides and changes in tone are not included in the speaking time.
- In languages written without spaces, like Japanese, the word count may differ slightly from other programs.

What's the difference between reading time and speaking time?
Reading time is how long someone takes to read silently; speaking time is how long it takes to say the text out loud, which is slower.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and the text never leaves your device.
