How to count the characters in a text
- Type or paste your text into the box.
- Check the characters with spaces and without spaces: they update as you type.
- Compare them with the limit you need (for example, 280 for a tweet).
- Trim what's over, or click Clear text to start again.
Most common character limits
Many texts have a character cap: 280 for a tweet, 160 for a standard SMS, about 150 for an Instagram bio, 50 to 60 for a web page title and around 155 for its meta description. A character counter lets you adjust your text before publishing so it doesn't get cut off.
Spaces count as characters, but some forms and assignments ask for the total without spaces. That's why both numbers are shown. Everything is calculated on your device: nothing is sent or stored.
Things to keep in mind
- Each platform counts in its own way: for example, X counts links with a fixed length and some emojis count as more than one character. Use this number as a guide.
- Line breaks count as one character when counting with spaces.
- Very long texts may take a moment, because everything is counted in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between characters with and without spaces?
With spaces counts every letter, number, symbol and also the spaces. Without spaces counts only the rest. Most social network limits use the count with spaces.
Do emojis and accented letters count as one character?
Accented letters do. Some emojis are made of several symbols joined together and this tool counts them as one, although a social network may count them differently.
How many characters can a tweet have?
Up to 280 characters on a standard account. Paste your text and compare the count of characters with spaces.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. The count is done in your browser and your text never leaves your device.
