How to take the typing test
- Choose the duration: 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds.
- Start typing the highlighted word: the timer runs from your first keystroke.
- Press the space bar to move to the next word. Correct ones turn green and ones with mistakes turn red.
- When time is up you see your words per minute, your accuracy and whether you beat your best score.
How typing speed is calculated
Words per minute (WPM) are calculated by counting every 5 correct characters (including the space) as one word and scaling it to one minute. Only words typed without mistakes count.
Accuracy is the percentage of words you typed correctly. Typing a little slower but without mistakes usually gives a better result than going fast and failing.
The average person types between 35 and 45 WPM on a keyboard; with practice and ten-finger typing you can reach 60 or more. The words are common words in the language of the page.
Things to keep in mind
- The words are simple, with no punctuation or special capital letters, so the result isn't comparable with tests that use long texts.
- On a phone it's usually slower and keyboard autocorrect can change words: it's designed mainly for a physical keyboard.
- Your best score is saved only in this browser; if you clear the site data, it's lost.
