How to encode or decode Base64
- Choose whether you want to encode or decode.
- Type or paste your text in the input box: the result appears instantly.
- If you'll use it in a web address, turn on the URL-safe variant.
- Copy the result or use it as the new input to chain operations.
What is Base64
Base64 is a way of representing data using only 64 characters (letters, numbers, + and /), so it can travel through systems designed for text: emails, web addresses, JSON files or authentication headers.
It's not encryption: anyone can decode it. It's not meant to protect passwords or sensitive data, only to carry or store them as text.
The URL-safe variant replaces + and / with - and _ and drops the = padding, so the result can go in a web address without being escaped.
Things to keep in mind
- This tool works with text. To convert files or images you need a different tool.
- Text is encoded as UTF-8; if you decode data that isn't UTF-8 text, it will tell you it's not valid.
- Base64 makes content about one third bigger.
Frequently asked questions
Is Base64 secure, does it encrypt text?
No. Base64 only changes how the text is represented and anyone can reverse it. To protect information you need encryption.
Does it work with accents and emojis?
Yes. The text is converted to UTF-8 before encoding, so special characters are preserved.
What is URL-safe Base64?
It's a variant that uses - and _ instead of + and /, and has no = padding. It's used in tokens and web addresses.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. The conversion happens in your browser and the text never leaves your device.
Is it free?
Yes, it's free, needs no sign-up and works right in your browser.
