How to convert cups to grams
- Pick the ingredient in your recipe (flour, sugar, butter…).
- Type the number of cups in the Value field.
- See the result in grams, highlighted at the top.
- You also see tablespoons, teaspoons, ounces and milliliters of the same ingredient.
Why it depends on the ingredient
A cup measures volume and a gram measures weight, so the equivalent changes with how dense the ingredient is. With the US cup (236.59 ml): 1 cup of all-purpose flour is about 125 g, granulated sugar about 200 g, powdered sugar about 120 g, butter about 227 g, rice about 185 g, oats about 90 g, oil about 218 g and honey almost 340 g.
The values are approximate: flour weighs more or less depending on whether it's sifted or packed into the cup. For baking, weighing on a scale gives more consistent results than measuring with cups.
Good to know
- Weights are approximate and depend on how the cup is filled and on the brand of the ingredient.
- The US cup of 236.59 ml is used; with a 250 ml cup the grams are about 5% higher.
- Only the most common ingredients are included; for others, look up their density in g/ml.
