How to use the ASCII table
- Look at the table: each row has the character's code in decimal, hexadecimal, octal and binary.
- Type a character, a code or the name of a control character in the search box to find it, or filter by type with the buttons.
- To convert, type some text in the «Text» box and pick the format: the codes appear below. You can also paste codes in the «Codes» box and the text is built.
- Separate the codes with spaces or commas. In hexadecimal, prefixes such as 0x41 are accepted.
What ASCII code is
ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is a table of 128 characters that assigns a number to each letter, digit, punctuation mark and control character. It was defined in the 1960s and is still the basis of text encoding: the first 128 characters of Unicode and UTF-8 are exactly those of ASCII.
Codes 0 to 31 and 127 are control characters, such as line feed (10), carriage return (13), tab (9) or escape (27). Code 32 is the space, 48 to 57 are the digits, 65 to 90 the uppercase letters and 97 to 122 the lowercase ones. The difference between an uppercase letter and its lowercase version is always 32.
Everything is calculated on your device: what you type is not sent to any server.
Things to keep in mind
- ASCII has only 128 characters (7 bits): it does not include accented letters, the ñ or symbols such as the euro. For those characters the tool shows the Unicode code.
- «Extended ASCII» (codes 128 to 255) is not a single standard: it varies with the code page (Windows-1252, ISO-8859-1…). This table shows only standard ASCII.
- Control characters are not visible: they are shown by their abbreviation (NUL, LF, CR, ESC…).
Frequently asked questions
What is the ASCII code of the letter A?
Uppercase A is 65 in decimal (41 in hexadecimal, 01000001 in binary) and lowercase a is 97.
How many characters does the ASCII table have?
128, numbered from 0 to 127: 33 control characters, the space, the digits, the letters and the punctuation marks.
What is the difference between ASCII and Unicode?
ASCII has 128 characters. Unicode includes more than 150,000 from all languages, and its first 128 are the ASCII ones.
What is the LF or CR control character?
LF (10) is the line feed and CR (13) is the carriage return. Unix systems use LF to end a line, while Windows uses CR and LF together.
Is it free? Is what I type saved?
It is free, needs no sign-up and everything is calculated in your browser: nothing is saved or sent.
