How to tune your guitar
- Choose the instrument (guitar by default) and tap «Turn on the microphone»; accept the browser permission.
- Play an open string and let it ring. The tuner shows the note it detects.
- If the needle is on the left you're flat and need to tune up; if it's on the right, you're sharp and need to tune down.
- When «In tune!» appears and the needle rests in the center, move on to the next string.
How the tuner works
The tuner analyzes the sound from the microphone, calculates its frequency and compares it with the nearest note. The difference is measured in cents (hundredths of a semitone): less than 5 counts as in tune. On a guitar, the open strings are E, A, D, G, B and E (E A D G B E).
The sound is analyzed on the spot on your device: it isn't recorded, saved or sent to any server. You can also tap each string of the instrument to hear the reference note and tune by ear. The frequency of the middle A is 440 Hz and can be changed.
Things to keep in mind
- It needs a microphone and your permission. The browser asks for authorization the first time.
- With background noise or several strings ringing at once, detection may fail: play one string at a time.
- On basses and very low strings, detection takes a moment longer.
