How to play Gomoku
- Choose your opponent: the computer (pick a level and who goes first) or a friend on the same device.
- Under "Rules and options" pick the board size: 9×9, 13×13 or 15×15.
- Tap a free intersection to place your stone. Black starts and you take turns placing one stone at a time.
- The first player to line up five stones in a row (or more) horizontally, vertically or diagonally wins.
Gomoku strategy
In Gomoku, the player who starts has an advantage, which is why it pays to alternate who opens. The strongest moves create several threats at once: an "open four" (four stones with both ends free) or a four next to an open three can't be stopped with a single move.
You have to defend as much as you attack: block your opponent's "open threes" before they turn into fours. The easy level makes mistakes, medium attacks and defends sensibly, and hard also thinks about how your opponent will reply. Everything is calculated on your device.
Good to know
- This version is free-style Gomoku: any line of five or more stones wins and there are no restrictions on Black (unlike Renju).
- On phones, the 9×9 or 13×13 board is better, with bigger squares to tap.
- Scores and settings are saved only in this browser. Against the computer, Undo takes back your move and its reply.
Frequently asked questions
How do you win at Gomoku?
By lining up five of your own stones in a row (or more) horizontally, vertically or diagonally before your opponent does.
How is it different from Connect 4?
In Gomoku the stones go on any intersection of the board and don't fall by gravity, and you need to line up five instead of four.
What is an open three?
Three stones in a row with both ends free: if you don't block it, it becomes an open four that can no longer be stopped.
Which board size should I pick?
15×15 is the traditional one. 9×9 is quicker and more comfortable on a phone.
Is it free? Do I need to install anything?
It's free, needs no sign-up and runs right in your browser.
