How to create a barcode
- Pick the format: Code 128 for general text and numbers, EAN-13 or UPC-A for retail products.
- Type the content. For EAN and UPC, the digits without the last one are enough: the check digit is calculated automatically.
- Adjust the bar width, the height and whether you want to see the text below. The preview updates instantly.
- Download it as PNG (to print or paste into a document) or as SVG (to scale without losing quality).
Which barcode format to choose
Code 128 is the most flexible: it encodes every printable keyboard character and is very compact with numbers. It works for internal labels, inventory, shipping and badges. Code 39 is older and larger, but almost every scanner can read it.
EAN-13 and UPC-A are the barcodes on products sold in stores. This generator draws the correct symbol but doesn't assign you a number: to sell a product in stores, the number has to be registered with GS1, the organization that manages the codes. For internal use you can make up your own numbers.
The barcode is drawn in your browser with our own algorithm and nothing is sent to any server. To print, use a bar width of 2 px or more and leave a white margin around it: scanners need it to detect the code.
Things to keep in mind
- This generator doesn't register EAN or UPC numbers: to sell in stores and marketplaces you need official GS1 numbers.
- Code 128 doesn't support accents or emojis: if you type them, the generator warns you.
- Always test the printed barcode with a scanner or your phone camera before printing a lot of labels.
Frequently asked questions
How is the EAN-13 check digit calculated?
The digits are added from right to left, multiplying alternately by 3 and by 1, and the check digit is whatever is needed to reach the next multiple of ten. The generator does it for you.
Can I use these barcodes on products I want to sell?
The symbol, yes, but the number must be one assigned by GS1 if you sell in stores or on platforms that require it. For your own inventory you can use any number.
What is the difference between PNG and SVG?
PNG is a fixed-size image, ideal for pasting into documents. SVG is a vector format: it can be enlarged without losing sharpness, ideal for large prints.
Is what I type saved or sent anywhere?
No. The barcode is generated in your browser and is never sent to or stored on any server.
Is it free?
Yes, it's free, with no watermarks and no signup.
