How to make a crossword
- Type one word per line, followed by a colon and its clue: “moon: Earth's natural satellite”. The clue is optional.
- Tap “Build the crossword”. If you do not like how it turned out, “Build a different one” tries a new combination.
- Solve it on screen: tap a square (tap it again to switch between across and down) and type with the keyboard or with the letters below the grid.
- Tap “Print crossword and answers” to get two sheets: the empty crossword with the clues and the sheet with the answers.
What it is for and how to get a good crossword
It is ideal for teachers, families and game organizers: you build a crossword with your class vocabulary, a birthday theme or any topic you like, and print it in seconds. The tool tries many random combinations and keeps the one that places the most words and makes the most crossings.
For a well-interlocked grid, use words that share letters (especially vowels) and mix long words with short ones. If a word is left out, it is because it has no letter in common with the others; change it or add another that connects it.
It works with any alphabet: with accents, tildes, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew or kana letters. Letters are shown just as you typed them and are compared ignoring only case and accents. Everything happens in your browser: your words and clues are not sent to any server.
Things to keep in mind
- Up to 40 words of 2 to 25 letters each, on a grid of up to 30 × 30 squares.
- It is not a crossword with ready-made definitions: you provide the words and clues, and the result changes every time you build it.
- Your words are not saved: if you close the page, they are lost. Print or copy the list before leaving.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type the words and clues?
One per line, with the word, a colon and the clue: “sun: The star of the solar system”. If you do not type a clue, the crossword shows just the number and the number of letters.
Why did a word not fit in the grid?
Each word has to cross another one at a shared letter. If it shares no letter with the others, or the grid is already very full at that spot, it is left out and we tell you which one. Change it or add a word that connects them.
How do I print the crossword with the answers?
Tap “Print crossword and answers”. The print window opens with two sheets: the first with the empty crossword and the clues, and the second with the answers. You can print only the sheet you need.
Can I make crosswords in another language or alphabet?
Yes. Type the words in any language: with accents, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew, Japanese and more. When checking, upper and lower case and accents do not matter.
Are my words saved?
No. Everything is built in your browser and is neither sent nor saved anywhere. If you close the page, you will have to type them again.
Can I solve it on my phone?
Yes. Tap a square and use the letters that appear below the grid: you do not need to open the phone keyboard. Tap the square again to switch between across and down.
