How to calculate your GPA
- Choose the scale: letters (A to F, out of 4.0) or numeric grades, with the maximum grade of your scale.
- Enter each course with its grade and number of credits. Use “Add course” to add more rows.
- See your GPA highlighted at the top, with the total credits and the quality points.
- Change a grade to see how it would affect your average and tap “Copy result” to save it.
How the GPA is calculated
The GPA (Grade Point Average) is a weighted average: each grade is multiplied by the course's credits, those “quality points” are added up and the total is divided by the total credits. A 4-credit course counts twice as much as a 2-credit one.
Example: a 3-credit course with an A (4.0), a 4-credit course with a B (3.0) and a 1-credit course with a C (2.0). The quality points are 12 + 12 + 2 = 26, the credits are 8 and the GPA is 26 ÷ 8 = 3.25.
Equivalents on the 4.0 scale the tool uses: A and A+ = 4.0; A− = 3.7; B+ = 3.3; B = 3.0; B− = 2.7; C+ = 2.3; C = 2.0; C− = 1.7; D+ = 1.3; D = 1.0; D− = 0.7; F = 0.
Good to know
- Every university has its own table; the letter scale is the most common in the United States and may not match your school's. Use numeric grades if yours is different.
- Honors and AP courses are not weighted (they don't add an extra point).
- This is an informational estimate: your institution calculates the official GPA.
Frequently asked questions
What is the GPA?
It is the weighted average of your grades, where each course counts according to its credits.
How do I calculate GPA with letters?
Choose the letter scale, enter each course's letter and credits. The tool uses the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0; B = 3.0…).
Can I use it if my grades go from 1 to 10 or from 1 to 100?
Yes. Choose “Numeric grades” and enter the maximum grade of your scale; the result is calculated with your own values.
What are quality points?
They are each course's grade multiplied by its credits. The GPA is the sum of those points divided by the total credits.
Are my grades saved?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent to any server.
