How to play Sokoban
- You move the character with the keyboard arrows or by swiping on the board. You can also tap a free cell to walk to it.
- If you walk into a box, you push it one cell. You can only push one box at a time, and you cannot push it into a wall or another box.
- Boxes cannot be pulled: once they are in a corner or against a wall with no way out, they will not move again. If that happens, use Undo or Restart level.
- The level is solved when all the boxes are on the targets marked with a green dot. Solve it in as few steps as you can.
Tips for solving the levels
Sokoban is a logic classic: there is no time limit or chance, just planning. Before pushing, look at the whole level and think about where each box has to go and along which path. It is almost always best to start with the box that gets in the way least and leave the ones near the middle for last.
The most common mistake is pushing a box into a corner: it is trapped forever there, unless the corner is a target. The same happens with a box against a wall if there is no target on that same wall. Also be careful not to lock yourself in behind a box you cannot get around. Since undo has no limit, experiment without fear.
The 30 levels are original to this site, built and checked one by one so that all of them are solvable. Everything happens in your browser: your progress and the levels you solved are saved on your device.
Things to keep in mind
- The solved levels, your best mark on each and the level in progress are saved only in this browser: if you clear the site data, they are lost.
- When you swipe on the board the page does not scroll; swipe outside the board to move around the page.
- Levels go from easier to harder: levels 1 to 6 have one box, 7 to 14 two, 15 to 22 three and 23 to 30 four.
Frequently asked questions
What is Sokoban?
It is a Japanese logic game (the word means “warehouse keeper”). You have to push boxes onto marked spots inside a warehouse, without being able to pull them.
Can you pull a box?
No, they can only be pushed. That is why thinking ahead matters: a box pushed into a corner or against a wall with no way out gets stuck.
What do I do if I get stuck?
Use Undo (or the Z key) as many times as you like to go back, or Restart level to start from scratch. All 30 levels have a solution.
How do I play on a phone?
Swipe your finger on the board in the direction you want to move, or tap a free cell to walk to it. To push a box, swipe towards it.
Where do the levels come from?
They are original to this site: they were computer-generated by pulling the boxes backwards from the targets, and a solver confirmed that all of them can be solved.
Is my progress saved?
Yes, on this device: the levels you solved with your best mark and the level you are on. Nothing is uploaded to any server.
