How to play solitaire
- There are seven columns with face-down cards and one face-up card on top of each. The stock is at the top left and the four foundations are on the right.
- In the columns, cards are stacked in descending order and alternating colors: a red 6 goes on a black 7. You can move one card or a whole pile; only a king can go into an empty column.
- Tap the stock to draw to the waste pile (1 or 3 cards at a time) and use the top card of the waste pile when it fits. When the stock runs out, tap it again to turn the waste pile over.
- Build each suit up on its foundation from ace to king. You win when all 52 cards are on the foundations.
Tips for winning at Klondike
Whenever you can, uncover cards: the columns with the most face-down cards are the ones that slow you down most. If you can choose between two moves, make the one that reveals a new card. Save kings for when there is an empty column, and do not empty a column unless you have a king to put in it.
Aces and twos go up to the foundation as soon as they appear, but do not rush with the higher cards: sometimes a red or black card is still needed in the columns to hold another. Before drawing from the stock, check whether there are moves on the table.
The “Hint” button suggests the most useful move. With “Always-solvable deals” the game only gives you games that can be won (a search on your device checks them), so if you do not succeed it is because of the play, not luck. Drawing 3 is harder than drawing 1.
Things to keep in mind
- A deal having a solution does not mean it is easy: you have to find it. If the search cannot confirm one in time, we tell you and the game comes out at random.
- The scoring is simple: 10 for moving a card up to the foundation, 5 for moving a card from the waste pile to a column or for uncovering one, minus 15 for moving a card down from the foundation and minus 20 for turning the waste pile over.
- The game in progress, your settings and your best time are saved only in this browser: if you clear the site data, they are lost.
Frequently asked questions
Can all solitaire games be won?
No. With a random deal, some of the games have no solution. If you turn on “Always-solvable deals”, the game searches before starting for a way to win and only gives you deals that have one.
What is the difference between drawing 1 and drawing 3?
Drawing 1, you can always use the card that comes up. Drawing 3, you can only use the top one of the group and the others stay covered until you take it out, which makes it quite a bit harder.
How do I move the cards on a phone?
Drag the card (or the pile) to its place, or tap it once to pick it and again so it moves by itself to the foundation or to a column where it fits.
Can I undo a move?
Yes, as many times as you like with the Undo button or the Z key, all the way back to the start of the game.
What does the hint do?
It marks a useful move: first moving cards up to the foundation, then uncovering a card in a column. If there is nothing on the table, it tells you to draw from the stock.
Is my game saved? Is it free?
Yes. It is free, works in your browser with nothing to install and saves the game, your settings and your best time on this device. No data from your game is sent to any server.
